Meet Jessica Lilland – Embedded Software Team

At Punch Through, we encourage everyone to proudly be themselves and want you to know the people behind the work that we’re so proud of. That’s why we launched our “Meet the Team” series, where we introduce you to one of our team members each month.

Meet Jessica Lilland, associate embedded software engineer at Punch Through. Jessica is currently studying computer engineering at Bethel University, where she is on the track team competing in pole vaulting. In what little freetime she has, you’ll find Jessica weight lifting, cooking, baking, reading, and trying to learn other things outside of school.

What were you doing before working at Punch Through?

Before Punch Through, I was mainly working toward my degree. I did spend some time tutoring students in the areas of math, computer science, and electronics. I also had a summer internship involving app development and worked as a research assistant for an optics professor on a firmware project – which pretty much brings us to today.

What is your favorite thing about Punch Through culture?

My favorite thing about Punch Through culture would have to be its growth mindset. No matter the position, everyone is supported and encouraged to learn and grow in the areas of most interest to you – both inside and outside of work. And the people within this organization are the exact same way, supporting one another whenever necessary.

Tell me a story about your most memorable moment while working at Punch Through

It’s hard to pick one memorable moment. But if I had to choose, it would be my first day. I arrived right before lunch, not knowing that lunch was such a big thing at Punch Through. The team all eats together, which was a bit intimidating but gave me an opportunity to meet everyone in a casual environment. It also set the stage for what to expect working here and participating in different activities.

What cool or rewarding things do you get to do on a regular basis?

One of the most rewarding things I get to do on a regular basis is contribute. I get to contribute to projects, which isn’t something interns usually have a chance to do. I’m directly involved with projects and on a team with other employees. It’s been a very rewarding and valuable experience.

What is the most valuable part of your work to you on a personal level?

On a personal level, the most valuable part of my work is the knowledge that I’ve been gaining. Being seen as an actual member of the team, I get to be part of the problem-solving process. I gain a better understanding of how to approach a similar situation should I encounter it again, which is sharpening my abilities and teaching me to be a better engineer.

What is different about Punch Through versus other places you have worked?

The biggest difference between Punch Through and other companies is how they do internships. You’re treated like a regular employee, which provides interns an opportunity to really learn. They’re more focused on giving employees a good place to work and grow instead of just on what the profits are looking like. Again, it’s been a very rewarding and valuable experience so far.
