Meet Willbur Hubbard – Mobile Software Team
At Punch Through, we encourage everyone to proudly be themselves and want you to know the people behind the work that we’re so proud of. That’s why we launched our “Meet the Team” series, where we introduce you to one of our team members each month.
Meet Willbur Hubbard, a mobile software engineer at Punch Through, who is responsible for mobile software development. In his free time, Willbur enjoys playing soccer and chess, traveling, and sports in general.
What were you doing before working at Punch Through?
I have a BS in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities. After graduation, I started my career at OSI, where I worked on their automatic generation control (ASG) technology for power generation companies. I decided it was time to make a move and happened upon a listing at Punch Through. Oddly enough, I had a friend who had worked for the company, and they had a lot of good things to say about the organization. It really got me excited, and looking forward to working here.
What is your favorite thing about Punch Through culture?
My favorite thing about the culture here would have to be the buddy system, which allows new employees to work closely with someone who was once in their shoes. During the first couple of months in any new work environment, it can be stressful, and having someone there to field your questions can really relieve all that. It definitely allows for a more positive growth process.
Tell me a story about your most memorable moment while working at Punch Through
My most memorable moment was when I first started working at Punch Through. The first day was a mixed bag of nervousness and excitement for the new position. But everyone was so welcoming that it definitely soothed the nerves. Soon after that, it was the company trip, which was quite the experience. You learn about what’s going on in the company, of course, but to be in such a casual environment and take part in games and other activities, you have a chance to get to know the people you’re about to work with on a personal level. It’s very relaxed and not as pressure-heavy. It was a nice introduction to the company.
What cool or rewarding things do you get to do on a regular basis?
The most rewarding thing I do on a daily basis is working with my team. I’m lucky to have a very knowledgeable, focused, clear, and caring group of coworkers, which helps me grow professionally. Working with Chee Yi Ong and Kevin Rafferty II has allowed me to grow a lot as an engineer.
What is the most valuable part of your work to you on a personal level?
The most valuable part of my work has to be the constant growth opportunities. Like I said before, the team is very knowledgeable, and I’m able to get continuous feedback. The input has helped me become a better engineer, a better professional, and a better leader.
What is different about Punch Through versus other places you have worked?
The biggest difference between Punch Through and other companies would be the culture and the people. While working here, I’ve gotten to know everyone and feel like I can reach out to others if I run into any problems. Even when they’re not on my team, people are open to questions and willing to offer their input. I don’t know if it’s because of our lunches, happy hours, or overall environment, it really feels like a true team here. Our bosses aren’t removed from us or more important than a new employee. It’s a really great place to work.
